Half of Tomsk's parks treated for ticks
Bustlin' Tomsk Aims to Keep Ticks at Bay
(With selected insights from local weather and tick behavior)
Tomsk's parkgoers can breathe easy as over half of the municipality's recreation zones have received anti-tick treatments — areas like New Cathedral Square, territories around White and Mavlyukovo Lakes, and local cemeteries, according to the city's press service.
Recent reports spanned from a tick infestation detected on January 10, 2025, in the village of Voronino near Tomsk, to the announcement of tick season commencement by sanitary authorities on March 20, 2025. The anti-tick treatment of Tomsk started mid-April. Every year, specialists in Tomsk tackle approximately 800 hectares.
"We have a plan-schedule that's adjusted based on research done by entomologists at each specific location. Weather conditions also play a part – for treatment, it needs to be dry and windless," says Natalia Kineva, deputy head of the Department of Roadwork and Urban Development.
Since early May, an estimated 1,700 locals in Tomsk's region have been bitten by ticks.
Tomsk's beloved burial grounds have also received tick treatment.
As per the preliminary schedule published on the city's official website, May 19 and 20 are reserved for the anti-tick treatment of Michailovsky Park and the BirchwoodPark in Kastake, and the SunnyPark, respectively.
Ticks can spread diseases such as Lyme disease, among others. Therefore, it is essential to take precautions like avoiding tall grass, wearing protective clothing, and using tick repellents whilst enjoying the city's parks. If bitten by a tick, ensure to remove it carefully and seek medical attention promptly. As seasonal weather patterns and tick behaviors can shift, it's always a good idea to stay informed about potential risks and follow safety measures to protect the community.
