Google Tests Hypertension Screening on Pixel Watch
Google is exploring new health features for the Pixel Watch. The tech giant is currently testing a hypertension screening function, which could enhance the wearable's health and safety capabilities. The trial, called the Fitbit Hypertension Study, collects data from Pixel Watch sensors and user input.
The study aims to detect elevated blood pressure levels. However, it's important to note that the Pixel Watch may not provide exact blood pressure numbers during this trial. Instead, it flags potential issues, alerting users to seek professional medical advice.
Google is not the first company to delve into hypertension screening. Apple is actively developing a similar function for the Apple Watch Ultra 3, using optical heart sensors and machine learning. While Google is testing this feature, no public information suggests it's developing a dedicated hypertension screening function specifically for the Pixel Watch yet.
Participants in the Fitbit Hypertension Study receive about $50 for their involvement. Some also wear a 24-hour blood pressure monitor for comparison. Google's goal is to make the Pixel Watch a serious player in digital health, expanding its health and safety features. The recent rollout of loss of pulse detection in the U.S. is a step towards this ambition.
