Heatwave Hits Germany: DWD Issues Warning for Severe Heat Stress

Germany is currently experiencing a heatwave, with temperatures soaring across the country. On Wednesday, much of the nation can expect temperatures to range from 31°C to 38°C. The southwest will continue to experience the hottest weather, with parts reaching up to 36°C.

The German Weather Service (DWD) has issued a heat warning for the southwest and the Rhine region, warning of "severe heat stress" when temperatures feel above 32°C with little cooling at night. The DWD also predicts unrelenting heat and humidity, with temperatures remaining high throughout the week.

As the heatwave continues, it's crucial to take precautions to stay safe. Here are some key measures to follow:

  • Hydration: Drink plenty of fluids regularly to prevent dehydration.
  • Clothing: Wear light, loose, and breathable clothing; avoid direct sun exposure especially during midday.
  • Home cooling: Keep curtains and blinds closed during daytime; open windows at night to create cross-ventilation; use fans, and place a bowl of ice in front of the fan if temperatures are above 35°C.
  • Protect vulnerable groups: Regularly check on older adults (especially over 75), infants, young children, and those with chronic health conditions. Babies and young children should be kept indoors during peak heat, dressed appropriately, and given cool baths before bed if needed.
  • Avoid high energy or strenuous activities: Particularly during the hottest parts of the day to reduce health risks.
  • Never leave children in parked cars: Temperatures inside vehicles can rise rapidly to dangerous levels.
  • Minimize heat sources indoors: Limit oven and appliance use to prevent additional heat indoors.
  • Stay informed: Monitor local weather alerts and heat warnings, follow official advice and emergency procedures.

The DWD also warns of "extreme heat stress" when the temperature rises above 38°C. Thunderstorms and heavy rain are possible on Thursday in some areas, and the stormy weather could continue into the coming weekend. During the weekend, temperatures will be between 28°C to 36°C. Coastal regions may have some showers and thunderstorms on Wednesday.

The DWD predicts even more sunny weather ahead, but thunderstorms, heavy rain, gusty winds, and even hail are potential weather conditions during the weekend. Older people and young children may be at risk during the heatwave, so it's important to take extra care to protect them.

Stay safe and cool, Germany!

  • In the midst of the heatwave, it's essential to consider mental health and wellness as well, as prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures can exacerbate anxiety and other mental health issues.
  • The prolonged heatwave could also impact environmental science, with higher temperatures potentially causing issues in natural habitats and wildlife, particularly in vulnerable ecosystems like Germany's forests and rivers. Additionally, increased heat and humidity could amplify weather-related phenomena, such as the likelihood of thunderstorms, in the coming days.
