"The vulture expired due to organ damage to the kidney, liver, and lung - all caused by lead poisoning. The analysis suggests that the bird consumed harmful heavy metals while scavenging on carrion contaminated with lead ammunition," explains Andreas von Lindeiner, the LBV's state representative for nature conservation.

Not just the rare, non-native vultures, lead in hunting ammunition poses a significant threat to other scavenging species as well, such as the bearded vulture, currently under reintroduction in Bavaria.

The LBV urges municipalities and private hunters to seriously consider the switch to lead-free ammunition. In several other federal states, hunting with lead ammunition is already prohibited on all grounds. The harmful impact of lead ammunition on large and often endangered birds of prey has been a known issue for some time, according to LBV. The animals ingest minute traces of lead left behind by spent bullets in the forest during hunting, which can be fatal, causing severe poisoning.

Tackling the Problem in Allgäu

For hunters in the Allgäu region, several alternatives to lead ammunition are available, including:

  1. Lead-Free Shotshells: These are made from materials such as steel, copper, or bismuth and are widely available for hunting purposes. German companies like Triebel offer lead-free shotshells suitable for Germany's terrains.
  2. Copper Bullets: Copper is another preferred material for non-lead hunting ammunition. Associated with excellent performance and environmental advantages, copper bullets are gaining fame among hunters. Perun Acorn bullets, for instance, represent the growing popularity of copper-based ammunition.
  3. Bismuth Bullets: Bismuth ammunition is another reliable alternative to lead. This material is less toxic and can be used in conditions similar to those required for lead ammunition.

Germany's hunting regulations are stringent, and lead ammunition is subject to certain restrictions. While federal law (section 27 of the German weapons law) does not outright ban lead ammunition, it promotes responsible usage. Hunters should adhere to local regulations and weigh the environmental impact of their choices.
