Former Paramedic's 'Hochfünf' Rule Saves Kids in Water
A former paramedic, Nikki Jurcutz, has shared a simple yet crucial water safety tip with parents. The 'Hochfünft' rule, which involves children giving a high five to their parent before entering water, has gained widespread attention and praise on TikTok.
The rule aims to ensure parents are actively supervising their children around water. Drownings can occur swiftly and silently, often in less than 20 seconds and just five centimeters of water, even when a parent is nearby but not fully engaged. Jurcutz, who co-founded Tiny Hearts Education offering child safety courses, recommends teaching children to high five a parent before going in the water. Alternative ideas include asking for permission or waiting for a thumbs-up, but the high five rule provides a clear, visible signal that a child is about to enter water.
The Hochfünft rule, initially recommended by an unknown former emergency medical technician, has been endorsed by Nikki Jurcutz and widely shared. It serves as a simple but effective strategy to enhance child safety around water, encouraging active parental supervision.
