Food Safety World Day on June 7th / German eating safety assessment

Bonn — A recently published survey by Forsa GmbH, commissioned by QS Quality and Safety GmbH (QS), indicates growing consumer confidence in the safety of food in Germany. The study reveals that 89% of respondents consider food in Germany to be very or extremely safe, marking a three percentage point increase compared to the 2023 study.

When it comes to food safety, consumer awareness of their personal responsibilities for storage, transport, and preparation of food is high. According to the survey, around two-thirds of respondents (68%) view storage as the area introducing the most risk, followed by transportation (64%) and incorrect food preparation (54%).

"Food safety is a top priority for everyone, not just on World Food Safety Day," emphasizes QS Managing Director Dr. Alexander Hinrichs. "Our confident processes contribute to increased trust in the safety of food among consumers." Around 89% of respondents feel that food in Germany is very or extremely safe, and this figure has increased by three percentage points since the last QS study in 2023. Only under 10% believe that food in Germany is not or hardly safe.

Recalls of suspect products from the market, often attracting significant public attention, also form part of food safety. The survey revealed that 37% of respondents believe that recalls have increased, 47% cannot detect any change, and 6% found that they have decreased. Interestingly, recalls are increasingly viewed positively, with 41% feeling that they boost consumer trust in safety systems.

Moreover, despite the general positive sentiment towards food safety, survey results show that 47% of respondents seek more information on the topic. A simple way for consumers to recognize tested food safety in fresh produce is by looking for the blue QS test mark. For further information, consumers can visit www.q-s.de.

The representative study was conducted by the market and opinion research institute forsa Gesellschaft für Sozialforschung und statistische Analysen mbH, based in Berlin, on behalf of QS.
