The Secretive Return of Taraba's Deputy Governor: Alhaji Aminu Alkari
Following Lengthy Medical Absence, Taraba Deputy Governor Restricted from Media and Public Engagement
After a prolonged four-month medical journey to Egypt, Alhaji Aminu Alkari, the Deputy Governor of Taraba State, made a quiet return to Jalingo amidst growing speculations over his health and government role. The news of his return, plagued in secrecy, has raised eyebrows, leaving residents in the dark about his status.
Alkari, who had suffered a partial stroke in November 2024, sought medical treatment in Egypt for three months before making a stealthy appearance in Abuja a month ago. His return to his hometown, Jalingo, was confirmed on the morning of May 4, 2025.
Airport staff at Danbaba Suntai Airport spoke of a private chartered jet that landed at around 1:40 a.m., escorted by tight security. Two government vehicles were said to have waited for hours before the jet's arrival, a testament to the hush-hush nature of the proceedings.
"We weren't allowed near the jet. We only got wind of it being the deputy governor after they had left," one airport worker confided.
Upon visiting his office along Specialist Hospital Road, behind the Presidential Lodge in Jalingo, the premises revealed an eerie emptiness. Reports suggest that Alkari has yet to resume work, waiting for Governor Agbu Kefas' return before making any public appearance.
One confidential source disclosed strict instructions not to allow anyone access to Alkari until Governor Kefas' return.
"This isn't about resuming work. The instruction is that the governor must return first before any access or official statement will be granted," the source shared.
Efforts to reach the state government for comment were fruitless. When contacted, the Governor's Special Adviser on Media and Digital Communication, Hon. Emmanuel Bello, chose to remain silent.
"I advise you to contact his press secretary. I'm not his press secretary to speak on his behalf," Bello described.
It's been confirmed that the office of the deputy governor has been without a press secretary since Alkari assumed office on May 29, 2023.
