Back pain in dogs is a common issue that can affect various breeds, with reported cases of disc-related back issues affecting around 10% of dogs. Some breeds, such as Dachshunds, have a higher risk of developing intervertebral disc herniation (IVDH), a common cause of back pain, with a lifetime risk of 28-31%.

Symptoms to Watch For

If your dog exhibits signs of discomfort, such as stiffness, reluctance to move, jump, or climb stairs, pain when turning or being touched on the back, limping, decreased activity, muscle weakness, muscle loss, difficulty rising, or reluctance to be touched, it could be a sign of back pain. Other symptoms may include trembling or shaking, signs of discomfort such as whimpering, vocalizing, or behavioural changes, and in severe cases, paralysis or difficulty walking.

In cases of infection like discospondylitis, additional signs may include fever, lethargy, decreased appetite, and weight loss.

Common Causes

Other causes of back pain in dogs include discospondylitis (infection of the spine discs), arthritis, and bone tumors like osteosarcoma.

Treatment and Prevention

For conditions like meningitis, steroids are the mainstay of treatment, requiring several months of twice-daily medications with a careful and slow reduction over time. Preventing a dog from becoming overweight is essential to prevent extra pressure on the spine and back. Helping an overweight dog lose weight is an important part of reducing pressure on their backs, even if it is difficult when the dog has also been prescribed rest.

In cases of IVDD, surgery might be necessary and should only be performed by someone with specialized qualifications and experience. Providing a car ramp, stair ramp, or steps onto the sofa can help dogs with back pain live their best life while protecting their back. An orthopedic mattress can provide needed support for dogs with back pain.

Preventive Measures

Maintaining healthy weight and musculature can help reduce the risk and severity of disc disease and related pain. Because the development of disc disease and related pain can be influenced by genetics and breed, dogs with predispositions (e.g., Dachshunds) should be monitored closely.

Alternative Therapies

Acupuncture is becoming recognized as a legitimate, evidence-based treatment for back pain in dogs, but it is not suitable for dogs with acute back pain caused by an injury. Joint supplements may help ensure dogs get the correct nutrients for joint repair, but it is important to discuss this with a vet as some supplements may interact with other medications the dog is on.

CBD products for pets may reduce inflammation and pain in dogs caused by arthritis, but it is important to discuss this with a veterinarian before giving any CBD products to the dog.

Diagnosis and Ongoing Care

Chronic, ongoing back pain is trickier to diagnose in dogs. Treatment for back pain in dogs may include pain medications, rest, and crate rest for bathroom breaks. Veterinary evaluation is important for diagnosis and treatment guidance if you suspect your dog has back pain or exhibits these symptoms.

Science can provide alternative therapies for managing back pain in dogs, such as acupuncture, joint supplements, and CBD products. Mental health and wellness is essential for pet owners as they navigate the diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing care of their dogs with back pain. This can include seeking support from veterinary professionals, understanding the symptoms and causes, and implementing preventative measures like maintaining a healthy weight and providing supportive bedding.
