Teaching Body Awareness and Personal Growth: A Dance Movement Therapy Workshop with Tripura Kashyap

In a unique and enlightening workshop, students at our institution were recently introduced to the world of dance movement therapy under the guidance of Tripura Kashyap, a renowned choreographer and movement therapist.

Ms. Kashyap, who has previously been involved in the "Embodied Awareness and Somatic Movement Practices" workshop series at the Somatic Arts Academy, led the students through a series of exercises designed to help them understand the importance of being aware of their bodies and themselves. This was not a dance class intended to master techniques, but rather an exploration of creativity behind movements and a means to establish a relationship between motion and emotion.

Throughout the workshop, Ms. Kashyap encouraged students to "paint their energy and breath with tai chi movements and play with this creative energy". However, it's important to note that while dance movement therapy incorporates elements from Tai Chi, a Chinese martial art form, Ms. Kashyap did not use these elements explicitly in this exercise.

The primary aim of the workshop was to aid motor functions, increase focus, and bring about a sense of calmness and relaxation. Students had the opportunity to think, feel, and express through their bodies, experiencing the flexibility of their own bodies during the process. The exercise was also designed to enhance their physical, emotional, mental, and cognitive well-being.

In addition to the physical benefits, Ms. Kashyap emphasized the importance of using dance as a medium for personal growth and development. She highlighted the importance of internal and external balance, but clarified that this was not the primary focus of the workshop in this context. Instead, the exercise encouraged monitoring of breathing, with the intention of aiding motor functions and increasing focus.

Overall, the workshop provided a valuable and unique experience for the students, offering them a chance to explore the world of dance movement therapy and its benefits for personal growth and development.
