Experts Warn: Cold Drinks May Trigger Heart Issues in Adults Over 40

Medical and nutritional experts have issued a warning for adults over 40 with cardiovascular issues. They advise caution when consuming very chilled beverages, particularly in cold weather. Sudden ingestion of icy drinks could trigger temporary changes in heart rate and blood pressure due to nervous system reflexes.

Those with heart disease should be particularly careful. Excessive consumption of very cold drinks can strain the cardiovascular system, as rapid cooling increases stress on the heart. Individuals with high blood pressure should avoid icy drinks to prevent additional circulatory stress.

Cold drinks can also cause mild digestive discomfort, slow gastric emptying, or lead to bloating in some individuals. For those with chronic digestive problems, heart conditions, or frequent rhinovirus infections, warm or room-temperature water is recommended.

While healthy adults can continue to enjoy cold drinks in moderation, older adults and people with related heart diseases should monitor their body's response. Hydration is the priority, and drinks should be consumed in the form that is most comfortable and does not cause symptoms. Adults over 40 with a history of cardiovascular problems should be mindful of their beverage choices, especially in cold weather.
