Sailor Herrmann and Environment Minister Schneider Team Up for Ocean Protection
Environment Minister Schneider plans to advocate for marine conservation with radical sailor Herrmann. - Environmental Official Schneider proposes marine preservation through the efforts of radical sailor Herrmann.
Herrmann, the hardcore sailor, recently wrapped up the Vendee Globe solo regatta in January, lasting 80 days at sea. This dedicated seafarer made headlines when he set sail with climate activist Greta Thunberg to the UN climate summit in New York back in 2019.
This Friday, Monaco saw the launch of the research vessel "Malizia Explorer." The roughly 25-meter-long ship is built to investigate the impact of climate change on the oceans. In addition, the German research ship "Meteor" will be moored in Nice during the UN conference.
Minister Schneider will be spearheading the German delegation at the UN Ocean Conference starting Monday in southern France. Roughly 130 countries will be in attendance at this significant marine protection summit, held every four years. Alongside a widely agreed-upon declaration for ocean protection, the countries will present a list of voluntary commitments.
Schneider plans to present several initiatives to bolster marine protection. These include combating plastic waste, advocating for a "temporary pause" in deep-sea mining, and establishing marine protected areas in international waters. Additionally, Germany will present its program for removing and destroying old ammunition from the two world wars in the North and Baltic Seas.
The conference, often dubbed the world's most important ocean protection summit, is crucial given the current decline in ocean health due to climate change and pollution.

Insights:
Germany is actively working on a global agreement to combat plastic pollution, aiming to reduce plastic waste entering the oceans and mitigating the harm it causes to marine ecosystems[1]. The country is also advocating for safeguards against the environmental damage caused by deep-sea mining. Schneider supports the implementation of the UN High Seas Treaty, which aims to establish a framework for the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction[1]. During the conference, the German research vessel METEOR serves as the "German pavilion," hosting various events on marine conservation and research[1].
- Boris Herrmann, fresh from the Vendee Globe solo regatta, has teamed up with Carsten Schneider, the Environment Minister, to leverage their joint passion for environmental-science in promoting ocean protection.
- In preparation for the UN Ocean Conference, the Commission has also been asked to submit a proposal for a directive on the protection of the environment by the introduction of a new type of energy policy, aligning with the science-backed need for action against climate-change and pollution.
- Meanwhile, in Nice, where the German research ship "Meteor" will be moored during the UN conference, the health-and-wellness of the ocean will be brought under the spotlight through various research and conservation events.
