Environmental authorities of Evraz NTMK monitor air quality in Niжnij Tаgил.
Revised Article:
Rolling into several districts of the city with modern equipment-laden automated mobile lab, they teamed up with city-level media journalists for a sneak peek at their air quality testing ventures.
Operational readings allow for constant monitoring of industrial operations' impact on the environment's status.
Svetlana Neugodnikova, Head of Environmental Protection Management at Evraz NTMK, shared some insights:
Evraz NTMK examines air for 19 substances, with an additional 8 analyzed by an accredited external organization. The analysis methods follow guidelines set by Rosgidromet, Russia's Federal Service for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring.
This mobile lab, built on a modern microbus, is equipped with certified analytical equipment for probing air samples. A built-in weather station identifies wind speed, direction, humidity, and temperature. A built-in computer logs the addresses of the measurement spots.
Results from these studies are sent to Roospotrebnadzor monthly. Evraz NTMK holds a license from the Federal Service of Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring, and the lab is appropriately accredited. Its equipment is regularly evaluated in the country's metallurgical centers.
Air samples may be collected through a sampling process, which comprises key steps:
- Gathering: Particulate matter, gases, and other pollutants are captured using portable sampling equipment in a mobile lab scenario.
- Examination: Following sample acquisition, the samples undergo analysis using various methods, ultimately focusing on particulates, nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, and volatile organic compounds.
- Assessment: Analysis results are then compared against local and national standards to gauge air quality, helping pinpoint areas for improvement and compliance with regulations.
In terms of Rosgidromet recommendations, it's expected they'd advocate protocols that align with Russian and international standards, including:- Measurement Standards: Ensuring measurements are made utilizing calibrated equipment and adhering to established methodologies.- Frequency: Regular sampling to capture variations in air quality over time.- Prioritization: Emphasizing pollutants most relevant to the region's environmental concerns.

The mobile lab, equipped with certified analytical equipment, not only probes air samples for substances like particulates, nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, and volatile organic compounds but also conducts climate-change-related research, such as environmental-science analysis of health-and-wellness and the impact on air quality from factors like industrial operations and climate-change. Each month, results from these studies are sent to Rosgidromet for assessment against measurement standards, frequency guidelines, and prioritization based on regional environmental concerns, ensuring compliance with national and international regulations.
