In the heart of Marl, the rescue station is a beacon of dedication and service, with emergency nurses, assistants, and nurse assistants working tirelessly around the clock. One such emergency medical technician, Katrin Wüller, after more than 10,000 deployments, continues to find passion in her role.

Katrin, a 37-year-old from Polsum, holds a responsible position at the Marl rescue station. She drives missions and trains the next generation, embodying the versatility and varied nature of the job. The profession is exciting, contributes to helping others, and is now the highest non-medical qualification in the rescue service, requiring three years of study.

The city of Marl has taken steps to ensure that the necessary staffing is met, given the increase in missions and their duration. The introduction of the emergency nurse profession has replaced the training for the emergency assistant, with the latter's training period reduced from two years to a 520-hour course for the emergency nurse.

However, a personnel vacuum has been created due to the change in training and the fact that no new emergency nurse trainees were trained during the transition period. To fill this gap, the city is now training more people. Three more new apprentices are expected to join the rescue station next year, making a total of 40 in the entire district to support the current team of 32 women and men.

Michael Bach, the personnel director, and Rainald Pöter, the fire chief, are aware of the stress in this profession. They have reduced weekly working hours from 48 to 43.5 hours, which could be a factor in the popularity of the training. The city also plans shifts a year in advance, ensuring that every colleague knows when they have a shift, a move considered family-friendly and an incentive for singles.

From 2027 onwards, only an emergency nurse will be allowed to lead missions. This decision underscores the demanding nature of the job, which can be stressful and requires a strict separation of work and private life due to shift changes and physical strain. Katrin Wüller, after more than a decade of service, emphasizes this point.

The fire department also provides support to ensure 24/7 coverage. All 72 firefighters have at least one qualification as an emergency medical technician and are able to accompany emergency deployments. The groundbreaking for the new rescue station is scheduled for 10.08.2023, a testament to the city's commitment to its emergency services.

Despite the current vacancies for emergency nurse training positions, the future looks bright for the Marl rescue station. With the right training and support, the city is ensuring that it continues to provide the best possible care for those in need.
