Dishonest pension practices at a dental supplies firm: Company acknowledges substantial financial setbacks

The Dental Care Provident Fund of Berlin (VZB) is grappling with a significant financial crisis, following a series of high-risk investments that have led to substantial losses and potential cuts in retirement benefits for its 10,000 members from Berlin, Brandenburg, and Bremen.

According to the fund's chairman, Tomas Schieritz, the financial crisis is deeper than initially thought, with excessive investments in risky assets such as start-ups and hotels. One such investment, a majority stake in the insurance start-up Element, resulted in losses estimated at around 60 million euros after the company declared bankruptcy following the termination of its reinsurance contracts.

Initial investigations by the VZB indicate evidence of "serious breaches of duty and compliance violations." To address this, three independent law firms have been commissioned to review the legal aspects of the VZB's financial situation.

The crisis has caused internal disputes within the pension fund, and concerns about its sustainability have been raised. In response, Dr. Alexander Klutke from Berlin has been elected as the deputy chairman, and lawyer Jörg Lips (Brandenburg) has been appointed as a member of the administrative board. However, the Bremen seat on the administrative board remains vacant as there was no nomination.

The VZB has also filed a criminal complaint with the Berlin public prosecutor's office, which is now investigating the matter. The public prosecutor's office has been involved in the situation at VZB, and claims for damages may now be made against those responsible.

The financial crisis could potentially impact the dental care services provided to VZB members. Members have been concerned about their pensions since the crisis was acknowledged in mid-July. In a letter to its members, Schieritz wrote, "We cannot rule out that there will be noticeable cuts in their pension claims and higher contributions."

This is not the first time the VZB has faced financial trouble; it was previously under investigation for investment fraud. The Berliner Zeitung obtained a copy of Schieritz's letter, which provides a clear picture of the challenges facing the Dental Care Provident Fund of Berlin.

As the situation unfolds, the VZB, its members, and the public await updates on the investigation's progress. The VZB's financial crisis and potential legal scrutiny underscore the importance of prudent investment strategies and adherence to legal and internal guidelines in managing pension funds.
