Current Updates from Press Information Bureau (14-06-2025)
India's fisheries sector is experiencing a significant growth, benefiting nearly 3 crore livelihoods with a 9% annual growth rate. This development was highlighted at the National Conference on Agri Stack: Turning Data into Delivery, organised by the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers' Welfare (MoA&FW) in New Delhi on June 14, 2025.
The conference served as a strategic platform for senior officials from the Centre and States to discuss the progress, challenges, and future roadmap for the implementation of Agri Stack under the Digital Agriculture Mission (DAM). Additionally, it provided a key platform for collaboration among inland States and Union Territories to align regional actions with national priorities for inclusive fisheries development.
One of the main highlights of the conference was the release of the 'Yoga Prabhava' report, a national study assessing the impact of International Day of Yoga (IDY) over the past decade. This was followed by the Yoga Connect 2025 Hybrid Global Summit, themed "Yoga for One Earth, One Health," hosted by the Ministry of Ayush at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.
Yoga Connect 2025, organised by the Central Council for Research in Yoga and Naturopathy (CCRYN), reaffirmed yoga's role in promoting health, unity, and global well-being, in line with India's vision of "One Earth, One Health." The summit marked 10 years of India's global yoga movement, initiated with the UN's recognition of June 21 as IDY in 2014.
The Yoga Connect 2025 summit adopted a hybrid format, with over 1,000 in-person participants and virtual attendees from around the world. Renowned yoga personalities such as Swami Baba Ramdevji, Acharya Balakrishnaji, HR Nagendraji, and others participated in the summit.
The summit also featured experts from countries like Bahrain, the US, the UK, and South Korea. Thematic sessions covered topics such as Yoga for Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) prevention, women's health, Yoga-Tech, Yoga commerce, and impact assessment.
In addition to the thriving fisheries sector, the Government of India has infused ₹38,572 crore into the sector through schemes such as Blue Revolution, Fisheries Infrastructure Development Fund (FIDF), Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), Pradhan Mantri-Mahila Kisan Sampada Yojana (PM-MKSSY), and Kisan Credit Card (KCC).
The Department of Fisheries aims to expand the culture area from 55 to 70 lakh hectares and double productivity from 5 to 10 tonnes/ha. States were urged to improve the utilization of FIDF funds, coordinate implementation with the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), and expand coldwater, ornamental, and saline aquaculture.
Over 300 fisheries start-ups are being supported for innovation in digital tools, value addition, and post-harvest technology. Technology adoption such as Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) and Biofloc, and integration of traditional knowledge with innovation, is promoted for sustainable growth.
