National Volunteer Week Honours Parkinson's Support Group Leaders

Last week marked National Volunteer Week, Australia's annual celebration of community service. Celebrations included visits from Stacey Foster, Support Group Coordinator for Parkinson's NSW, to various support groups across Port Stephens, Forster, Taree, Port Macquarie, and Maitland.

During her visits, Maitland Support Group members were applauded with Volunteer Week certificates. Stacy emphasized the essential role of volunteers in our society, particularly those who make positive changes in their communities. This year's theme, "The Change Makers," represents the volunteers who drive social change, turning their passions into purpose and giving their time selflessly.

Stacey commended the Support Group leaders and participants for their commitment and the difference they make in their communities. The support group leaders shared their motivations, including providing educational opportunities, helping those more severely affected by Parkinson's, and forming connections with like-minded individuals.

While extensive research on the specific motivations and experiences of all volunteers in Parkinson's support groups was unavailable, broader insights suggest that volunteers are generally driven by a desire to make a difference, raise awareness, and build strong community networks. Volunteers often find personal growth, a sense of belonging, and empowerment in their roles.

Parkinson's NSW has partnered with organizations like Fight Parkinson's and Parkinson's Australia to support individuals living with Parkinson's, and these partnerships provide opportunities for volunteers to contribute meaningfully.

In her visit, Stacey acknowledged the vital work done by the Support Group leaders and participants, noting, "On behalf of myself and Parkinson's NSW, we thank you for your commitment to your Support Groups."
