Coast Guard saves fisherman, believed to be experiencing appendicitis: Important lives are given vital aid in oceanic rescue
Off the Shores of Vietnam: A Tale of the Coast Guard's Rescue, Informal Guide
Imagine being miles off the coast of Vietnam, battling severe abdominal pain on your fishing vessel. Such a scenario unfolded for a 50-year-old fisherman from Quảng Nam Province, who was believed to be suffering from acute appendicitis.
The Coast Guard, our unsung heroes, jumped into action to save the day. When the stricken boat sent a distress signal around 2am, the Coast Guard command in Bà Rịa-Vũng Tàu Province sprang into action. They dispatched Ship 8005, armed with rescuers and medics, to the fishing vessel's location off the central coastal province of Khánh Hoà.
By around 1:25pm, they reached the vessel and our ill fisherman, Trần Công Nhanh. The medics administered first aid on board before transporting him ashore to Trường Sa Lớn Island for further treatment.
When the Sea Meets Sickness
A fisherman who took seriously ill with suspected acute appendicitis on board his boat off the central coastal province of Khánh Hoà has been brought ashore for treatment by the Coast Guard.
When acute appendicitis strikes in the high seas, treating it can present unique challenges due to the remote location and limited resources. This scenario is quite common for fishermen off the coast of Vietnam, where medical facilities are far and few between.
Here's a taste of what might take place in such emergencies:
- Initial Assessment: Non-medical personnel on board, trained in basic first aid, perform an initial assessment of the patient's symptoms.
- Basic First Aid: While waiting for rescue, the patient may be given rest, hydration, and pain management with available medication.
- Communication with Authorities: The vessel contacts coastal authorities or maritime rescue services for help.
- Stabilization and Transport: If possible, the patient may be stabilized on board, or arrangements may be made for transport to a hospital.
