Solingen's "Do You See Me?!" Road Safety Campaign Hits a Record High

On Tuesday morning, the city of Solingen saw a remarkable display of community engagement as over 3000 children from 23 elementary schools and 48 kindergartens participated in the annual "Do You See Me?!" road safety campaign. This year's event marked a significant increase in participation compared to last year, with an additional participation from 6 schools and 6 kindergartens.

The action, which took place between 7:45 and 8:15 a.m., saw these young participants stationed at various busy intersections and streets across the city, donning high-visibility vests to ensure their visibility. They distributed leaflets and information flyers to drivers, urging them to drive slower and always assume that children are unpredictable.

One of the locations was the elementary school on Katternberger Street, where all classes participated. The school had set up a display with banners reading "Slow Down!" and "Do You See Me?!" at the intersection of Kölner Street/Katternberger Street.

The Police Chief Commissioner Katrin Grastat from the traffic accident prevention of the police stated that this was a record participation for the "Do You See Me?!" action in Solingen. The children also chanted "Do You See Me?!" in speaking choirs during the action, further emphasising the importance of their message.

The goal of the campaign is to reduce the number of injured children in traffic accidents in Solingen. In 2023, 46 children were injured in a traffic accident in Solingen, two of them severely. Parents are encouraged to use reflective elements on their children's clothing to increase their visibility.

With mutual respect, even the weakest road users (children) are protected. The children explained to drivers what they were doing during the action, reminding them of the importance of their role in ensuring road safety. One child even asked a driver to drive only 30 kilometers per hour for safety reasons.

The "Do You See Me?!" campaign is a well-known local initiative aimed at increasing awareness among children, parents, and drivers to improve children's safety in traffic. Record participation typically indicates strong community engagement, likely involving hundreds or thousands of children from schools and local organizations.
