On June 17, emergency services were summoned to Burrell's residence in Brooklyn, NY, where she was pronounced dead upon arrival. The cause of death was determined to be 'acute intoxication due to the combined effects of diphenhydramine, ethanol, cetirizine, and amphetamine.'

Diphenhydramine and cetirizine are antihistamines, ethanol is a compound found in alcohol, and amphetamine is a medication typically used to treat ADHD.

In the days leading up to her demise, Burrell was active on Instagram, posting a selfie with a New York City icon, dressed head to toe in a bright green, five days before her passing. The post was captioned, 'I ran into @greenladyofbrooklyn in my neighborhood today!!'

Burrell's television career spanned over a decade, with her first major appearance on 'Iron Chef America' as a sous chef in 2005. She helmed her own show, 'Secrets of a Restaurant Chef,' from 2008 to 2012. Burrell was also a regular on 'Worst Cooks in America' from 2010 to 2024, but was noticeably absent from her longstanding role for several months before her death. No explanation was given for her absence during the celebrity edition of the show.

The Food Network extended their thoughts and condolences to Burrell's family, friends, and fans during this time of immense loss. They remembered her as a remarkable person and culinary talent.

Burrell's light was described as radiating far beyond those she knew, touching millions across the world. Her family also released an emotional statement, calling her a 'beloved wife, sister, daughter, stepmother, and friend.'
