Charity organization United Way Halton & Hamilton aims to gather $12 million: 90 teams collectively tackled the challenge of pulling a 200,000-pound airplane as part of their fundraising effort.
In an effort to address urgent issues such as food insecurity, housing stability, youth mentorship, mental health, and supports for seniors, United Way Halton & Hamilton has launched a fundraising campaign with an ambitious goal of $12 million.
The campaign, themed 'United in ACTION', encourages residents, businesses, and community leaders to support United Way through donations, volunteering, or advocacy. The 2025 campaign aims to ensure that the community has the help they need, when and where they need it.
Carrie Fletcher, an executive in the healthcare sector and the 2025 Campaign Cabinet Chair, emphasized the growing need in the community and United Way's role in reaching people at scale. Fletcher was proud to stand with the community in reaching the $12 million goal to deliver stability during uncertain times.
The campaign launch took place at the largest UPS Plane Pull event to date, with more than 2,000 people attending to cheer on teams and support their community. An all-female team was one of the 90 teams that took part in the event, which involved pulling a 200,000-pound aircraft fifty feet across the tarmac at Hamilton International Airport.
Brad Park, President & CEO of United Way Halton & Hamilton, expressed concern about the increasing need for support and longer wait times for families. Last year, United Way Halton & Hamilton supported over 226,500+ individuals and families across Burlington, Halton Hills, Hamilton, Milton, and Oakville. However, half of all supported United Way programs already face waitlists, highlighting the urgency of the situation.
Maple Leaf Foods, a significant facility located in the Burlington, Ontario region, initiated a fundraising campaign for United Way Halton & Hamilton in 2025. The leadership of the company recognized the pressures families and individuals are under daily and the vital role United Way plays in the community.
Carrie Fletcher, witnessing these pressures firsthand, emphasized the importance of the campaign and the role each individual can play in making a difference. As the community faces challenges such as a struggling economy, housing pressures, and widening gaps in mental health support, United Way Halton & Hamilton is on the frontlines, providing essential services and support.
The $12 million goal reflects the urgency and the responsibility to ensure stability for the 124 essential community programs supported through United Way. By standing together, the community can make a significant impact and provide the help needed for those in need.
