Swedish Tennis Legend Björn Borg Reveals Struggles with Drug Addiction and Cancer Diagnosis in New Memoir
In a shocking revelation, tennis icon Björn Borg has detailed his struggles with drug addiction and a recent cancer diagnosis in his new autobiography.
Borg, who revolutionized the sport by winning Wimbledon five times in a row and Roland-Garros six times, admitted that his addiction to cocaine began in the early 1980s at the New York club Studio 54. The location of his darkest days of addiction was Milan, where he was married to Italian singer Loredana Bertè from 1989 to 1992.
Borg's account of his cocaine addiction is candid and harrowing. He describes feeling a rush similar to his tennis court experiences when he first tried the drug. However, his addiction quickly spiralled out of control, leading him to hit rock bottom. During this time, he mentions that he was in bad company and drugs and pills were easily accessible.
The location of Björn Borg's lowest point came to light when he collapsed on a bridge in the Netherlands due to a heavy drug overdose in 1996, just before a veterans' tennis match. His father was present at the time of his hospitalization.
Borg's struggles didn't end there. In September 2023, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He discusses his fear that the cancer could spread and he will have to regularly check if it was caught in time.
Despite his personal struggles, Borg's impact on tennis remains undeniable. He retired from tennis at the age of 26 in 1983, but his legacy continues to inspire players today.
Björn Borg's memoirs provide a raw and honest look into the life of one of the greatest tennis players of all time. His story serves as a reminder of the high price that success can exact and the importance of seeking help when needed.
