Belarus Makes Medical History: First Fetal Tumor Removal
Belarusian medicine has made history with a groundbreaking operation. A tumor was successfully removed from an unborn child, marking the first such procedure in the country's history. The health ministry announced the unique operation on October 8.
The complex open-heart surgery, performed using artificial circulation, was carried out by cardiothoracic surgeon Yevgeny Kostyukovich. The procedure was necessary after a mixoma was discovered in the fetus at 23 weeks. The operation and the subsequent recovery period went smoothly without any complications.
The baby, a healthy boy weighing 3230 grams and measuring 52 centimeters, was born at 38 weeks via a planned cesarean section. Both mother and child were discharged in good condition on October 8.
This successful operation demonstrates a significant advancement in Belarusian medical capabilities. The removal of a tumor from an unborn child opens up new possibilities for fetal healthcare in the country.
