Authorities successfully extricate a senior citizen, suffering from dementia, from a perilous predicament
Missing Senior Found Safe in Merzen and Ankum
A 78-year-old dementia sufferer who went missing from a care facility in Merzen and Ankum, Germany, on June 13, 2025, has been found safe. The senior was located around 5:20 pm on a remote forest path between Overbergstraße and Westerholter Straße in the Merzen area.
The police, along with numerous private volunteers, launched a large-scale search operation involving officers from Bersenbrück, Fürstenau, and Quakenbrück. The search areas expanded to include the Voltlage Damm, Ankumer Damm, and wooded areas around Tuting and Westerholte, due to information from the public.
Initially, due to his dementia, the senior was deemed barely able to orient himself. However, he appeared to have lost his way and was provided with medical care at the scene. The public was asked for help via the Katwarn system.
Relatives and emergency services expressed deep relief at the successful conclusion of the search operation. The incident highlights the importance of cooperation between police, care staff, relatives, and the public in emergency situations.
The search efforts were complicated by recent rain and softened forest paths. For more information, please visit the Police Inspectorate Osnabrück's website at http://www.pi-os.polizei-nds.de.
