Annual Organ Donations in 2024 Result in a Rose Network of Recipients

Over 10,000 individuals in Germany are anxiously awaiting a life-altering organ transplant. A substantial number of these recipients merely yearn for a restored sense of well-being.

To celebrate the upcoming "Day of Organ Donation," scheduled on Saturday, June 7th, the Maria Hilf clinics were graced with a visit from Netzwerk Organspende NRW on Wednesday, June 4th. As a "Thank You" gesture, 953 roses were distributed across four clinics in NRW – a representation of the organ donations in Germany in 2024. Last year, three organ donations took place in the Maria Hilf clinics.

The event was accompanied by Konstanze Birkner, Managing Director of Netzwerk Organspende NRW, along with Sabine Link and Christian Brandtner, the managing physician in the DSO region NRW. An organ recipient who has sported a transplanted liver since 2009 was also present.

At approximately noon, an informational booth was set up at the clinic entrance, disseminating details about organ donation. The guests later explored various departments linked to the topic, including internal medicine, neurological and surgical intensive care units, the operating area, cardiology, nephrology, and dialysis.

In a heartfelt gesture, Mrs. Birkner distributed more roses to the managing director of the Maria Hilf clinics, Dr. Paul Schneider, as well as to the chief physicians and senior physicians. This esteemed group included PD Dr. med. Andreas Hohn, chief physician of the clinic for anesthesia and operative intensive care medicine, Prof. Dr. med. Philipp Albrecht, chief physician of the clinic for neurology, Dr. OAÄ Athina Vassiliadou, senior physician of the clinic for nephrology and diabetology, and Dorothee Steven, senior physician of the clinic for anesthesia and operative intensive care medicine.

Organ donation awareness campaigns play a significant role in shedding light on the importance of organ transplantation and motivating individuals to become donors. These initiatives typically involve collaborations with healthcare institutions, local groups, and organizations, fostering public awareness and appreciation for the donors and their families. Engaging with hospitals like Maria Hilf clinics is vital, fostering a sense of community support for organ donation. The "Thank You" campaign, such as the one hosted by Netzwerk Organspende NRW, also serves to recognize the selfless acts of organ donors, offering comfort and gratitude to their families.

During the visit of Netzwerk Organspende NRW to the Maria Hilf clinics, discussions on medical-conditions and health-and-wellness, particularly organ transplants, were held. The celebration of organ donation day aimed to raise awareness about science-backed organ transplantation procedures and its impact on individuals seeking relief from medical-conditions.
