Unleashing Kid Power: A School's Emotional Support Hotline Serving Up Laughs and Positive Vibes
Kids got the magic formula for good vibes? Their unfiltered, heartfelt words, of course! One innovative California school, West Side Union Elementary in Healdsburg, harnessed this incredible power by launching an extraordinary project - the Peptoc Hotline.
This misnamed, yet charming, initiative made its debut on their school website on February 26, offering mini pep talks catering to a variety of emotions. Giving the line a ring at 707-998-8410 leads you through prompts in both English and Spanish.
"If you're feeling angry, distressed, or blue, press 1. If you need a morale boost and words of wisdom, press 2. If you yearn for a pep talk from kindergartners, press 3. If you crave the sound of pure joy, press 4. For uplifting words in Spanish, press 5."
Dialing any number unlocks a lively loop of young voices dishing out advice or cheerleading as kids do best. Here are a few examples:
- "If you're upset, vent your feelings in a diary or draw pictures to unburden."
- "If you're anxious, grab your wallet and buy an ice cream or shiny new shoes!"
- "Be proud of yourself."
- "If you're feeling overwhelmed... bounce on a trampoline!"
- "Just breathe, you can handle it!"
With the guidance of their art teacher, Jessica Martin, and local artist, the students dreamt up this public art project aimed at aiding their community in navigating the unsettling past two years. Martin recognized the immense power kids' wisdom and pure joy wield, stating, "Their creativity, optimism, and boundless cheerleading is precisely what will help us through the challenging times."
The Peptoc Hotline took off like wildfire, its feel-good messages World Wide Web-worthy in mere days. Receiving hundreds of calls an hour and surpassing the 5,000-daily calls mark, the energizing emotional support was infectious, leaving listeners both roaring with laughter and wiping away tears.
With help from external funding, the school plans on keeping Peptoc running until the end of the school year. Support Peptoc and its enrichment programs by donating here!
