Americans Overwhelmingly Praise Schools and Teachers for Pandemic Response
Americans are overwhelmingly satisfied with their local schools and teachers, despite the challenges posed by the pandemic. Multiple surveys reveal high levels of support, with even political opponents acknowledging the educators' efforts.
According to surveys conducted at MIT's Teaching Systems Lab, supermajorities of Americans express satisfaction with their local public schools and teachers. This positive sentiment is echoed in poll after poll, regardless of political affiliation. For instance, the National Parents Union found that a high percentage of parents praised their schools for handling the Omicron waves in January.
Justin Reich, director of the MIT Teaching Systems Lab, confirms that the majority of U.S. citizens believe teachers have done a great job during the pandemic. This is further supported by a National Parents Union survey, where over 70% of respondents praised their school's handling of the Omicron surge. Even an NPR poll found that 88% of respondents agree that teachers have done their best given the circumstances, and 82% agree that their child's school has handled the pandemic well.
Despite the Republican party latching onto some disaffection with schools, the overwhelming consensus is that teachers and schools have handled the pandemic well. Reich believes that teachers should be made more aware of this widespread public support to boost morale and recognition.
