A fresh champion claims the Super Mario Bros speedrun world record after a four-year drought, stating they are just 15 frames from a flawless run: "15 frames separate us from a perfect speedrun."

In a historic achievement, runner averge11 has claimed the world record for the Super Mario Bros. any% speedrun, setting a new time of 4:54.51. This record surpasses Niftski's previous standing record of 4:54.56, which the latter held in 2021.

averge11's journey to break the world record was a long one, having spent months meticulously trying to perfect their run. However, the road to success was not without its challenges. During the record-setting attempt, averge11 faced "awful fails," including a time of 4:54.748 in one instance.

The frame rule, a key factor in Super Mario Bros. speedruns, played a significant role in this close competition. The rule states that the game only checks for level completion every 21 frames, making it possible for human runners to tie tool-assisted speedruns (TAS). This fine margin has always been a challenge for top runners, and in the final stage, 8-4, every microsecond counts.

In fact, attempting a time save in stage 8-4 is only possible after an absurdly difficult perfect run through the entire game. This stage has been a stumbling block for many runners, including averge11, who has yet to tie the TAS through all stages, leaving the final stage, 8-4, as the only obstacle to reaching literal perfection.

Community historian Summoning Salt commented on Twitter, "The march to a perfect speedrun continues, with only 15 frames separating the current record from perfection."

Niftski, despite losing the any% world record, still holds the warpless Super Mario Bros. record. Organizers of speedrun events now have to ask permission for every single game in the future, following Nintendo's decision to pull games from a Japanese charity speedrun event due to "unauthorized use."

Despite the new record, averge11 is unsure about continuing with this category. They expressed excitement, however, about seeing what other runners will do in the future. The world record for the Super Mario Bros. any% speedrun now stands at 4:54.51, a testament to the skill and determination of the speedrunning community.
